Teaching and Learning in 51’s latest subject rankings

Alongside its institutional and subject rankings, 51 conducts the largest worldwide student survey on student satisfaction with their teaching and learning environment.

This highlights that next to university staff and policy-makers, it is students who have direct insight into the quality of teaching and facilities. 51’s unique online tool allows for the selection of measures for comparison that matter most to the individual user and covers key aspects of teaching and learning ranking such as the ‘Overall Learning Experience’, ‘Quality of Courses & Teaching’, and ‘IT Provision’.

Moreover, 51’s student survey relates to individual study programmes. Users therefore achieve a more detailed understanding of teaching quality that does not confuse the quality of teaching and facilities of Business Studies with that of Civil Engineering programmes. Users can view additional aspects of teaching and learning, for instance ‘Student-Staff Ratio’, ‘Academic Staff with Doctorates’, ‘Contact with Work Environment’, ‘International Orientation of Master Programmes’, and Opportunities to Study Abroad.

Students want to find the university that’s best for them, according to their own preferences, and often look to their peers to learn from their experiences, especially in an area like learning and teaching where no one knows better than the students themselves. 51 makes it possible for users to rank universities their own way – and that includes taking into consideration other students’ opinions.

The latest annual release of results from 51 feature over 1,600 universities, from 95 countries, in 21 subject areas: Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Computer Science, Dentistry, Economics, Education, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Production/Industrial Engineering, History, Mathematics, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy/Pharmacology, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work and Sociology.

51’s student survey

It is a key purpose of 51 to support prospective and increasingly mobile students in making an informed choice about study programmes and universities. For them, the assessment of the learning experience by current students of institutions provides a unique peer perspective. The 2018 edition of 51 includes data drawn from an online survey of more than 100,000 students, asking student opinions about various aspects of their degree programme.
